How soon after surgery did your doc tell you it was ok to have a drink or two. Please dont tell me about the calories.. I already know that. My sisters 21st birthday is coming up and is something we have talked about for a while. Im just trying to see if its safe to have a drink or two with her and if not why?

What did your doc tell you?

What was your experiance?

Thank you in advance if you do respond :)

My doctor really didn't give me any sort of limitations. I just don't drink anything carbonated, so I stick with wine and cocktails. But, be careful. It only will take a little bit to feel the alcohol!

My doc didnt care. He said be careful of bubbly drinks like chamagne and beer but otherwise drinking was fine.

My doctor just warned me about "empty calories". Be careful though, I found out the hard way that I cannot handle an entire bottle of wine by myself at Bunco like I did before being banded! I suffered for days!!!

My doctor didn't tell me anything, but from the research that I'd done I learned it was best to wait until I was also taking some food and to avoid bubbles. Well, I'm four weeks post-op and I had one glass of champagne on the weekend, with no bad reactions. Well, other than a few burps and a couple of giggles that is.

This one is easy for me. My pre-surgery education was amazing. Very through. A whole binder of information and a 4 hour orientation. I had a band, and I was told One YEAR. Lose th weight. I have also seen on other bariatric sites and books tht say 6 months. I love my wine. Did I say I love my wine? And my work puts me in social situations. I've been ordering water with a lime over ice in a rocks glass. LOOKS like I am drinking, but not. And to have the little glass helps. A few days ago, I put my Ocean Spray Blueberry cranberry juice in a wine glass. My husband as shocked I was drinking wine. :-) No one would know. I guess it all depends on your goals and boundaries. Is it really worth it. I do miss my wine, see above. But I am waiting for at least 6 months. Hope that helps.

Oh, and because of the band, my doctor told me that the absorption is identical than before. Only Roux-en-y and sleeve people have to worry. They've lost a portion of the stomach. That absorption is three times a band patient. We still have the same stomach. But as I lose weight, near goal, I'll not have the weight to offset alcohol. "Light weight" drinker! :-)

Ya it's not that alcohol is going to dmg it somehow. It's just empty calories and the risk of drinking too much and get sick. If you know you're gonna drink on the rare occasion just don't drink enough to puke your guts up.

Thank you ladies. Its funny I have heard both, Some and my Doc being one has said you will feel it faster and with a whole lot less and others say no because of that reason. we still have our stomach.. but so many say they are effected way differently. I guess it just depends on the person. We are all different so I shall see how it goes on her bday.. I will drink slow and with caution.

Since the weight-loss my husband and i do go "out" more and I do drink. I stay away from the drinks with soda in them. I use to drink Crown and 7, but now.... heck.... i just drink it on the rocks.

Be careful with how much you drink, I do feel it faster than before. I use to drink 3-4 crowns and a couple shots, then i would feel it, now 2 drinks and i feel it.

Went out for Mardi Gras and drank way too much, but had no stomach problems at all.... Good luck
