Questioning myself

I started the journey of getting banded in November of 2010. It has been, so far, fast and easy. I have already been approved by my insurance company. I am scheduled for surgery on January 21, 2011. I am so nervous, scared and excited. But… I am wondering if I am making the right decision. I have been reading message boards of several sites and there are so much complications and complaints about the band. I choose the band because I didn't want my insides cut and rerouted and the lap band surgery is performed locally. This is the only bariatric procedure being performed in the state I live in. I also don't have to wait. I get my surgery in less than three weeks. I just need to vent. I hope that the band works out for me and that I do not have all the complications that I read about. I will be so disappointed.

I had my surgery on December 17, and my first fill on January 7. I have lost a total of 23.5 pounds so far, and I'm down 2 clothing sizes with just this 23 pounds lost! I have had no complications it has been so easy it's almost scary! My only wish is that I would have done this years ago maybe I wouldn't have been the "Fat Mom" at my Daughter's wedding last March! I know others post about their complications and the throwing up and other bad things that go along with this surgery, but I have been following everything my Doctor has told me to do which is cut thing into very small pieces and chew, chew, chew! Stick with lean proteins, veggies and if I have enough room (usually I don't) I can have starches. I never was one to snack between meals before surgery so that is not a problem now. It is normal to be scared, nervous, and excited about the unknown, but I believe you will come through your surgery just fine! I'll keep you in my prayers!

You can do it. It is a journey. I got banded on 09/08/10 and have now finally gotten to the 40 lb mark. I see on the post-op forum, that some people only lose a little in the same amount of time that someone else might lose alot. Everyone's different.

I've been lucky and haven't had problems with any food.

My struggle is mentally, with telling myself to stop eating at 1 cup of food.

Good luck to you.

I, too, have had no complications and have no complaints about the band. My surgery was 11 months ago and I've lost 65 pounds so far. I can eat almost everything I could eat pre-band. I've only spit up about a half-dozen times, and each time, I knew EXACTLY why it happened (usually from eating too fast)! Yes, some people have complications, or don't see the progress they want, but for some of us, it is the perfect tool to lose weight and keep it off. It's great that you're keeping yourself informed about the what-could-go-wrong, but try to think positive! It works!

I am now over 5 months out and I have lost 55 lbs as of today. I am so excited! The first few days after surgery, I did question myself. However, 5 months out, I can say for me it is well worth it. The lapband was the perfect tool for me. I was like you and just could not have anything cut in my body. Trust me I don't fault those who do...it just wasn't for me. Just remember this is a tool to help you on your journey for weight loss. Good luck on your journey!

May I ask you what types of food do you eat? I know lapbanders must eat protein first, but I don't know how to keep protein that it doesn't get boring. My surgeon said I was only permitted to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner and no snacks or anything in between meals. I have to get used to eating only at specified times instead of all day long. I am not a junk food junkie. I love fruit and veggies, but I was told that protein is the most important thing and I need some recipies to advance to so I dont get bored eating the same things over and over again. That is when I start eating too much, if I am not satisified. Thank you. I hope I can get back on to find you and your response. I havent been on the site because I find it difficult to use. It used to be easy. I can't even find my own blogs. Maybe I am just not too smart when it comes to this, but I do know when I first went on this back in Nov. 5th and it was fairly easy and now I am having trouble finding when someone replies back to me. Anyway, if you have any recipies that you eat, I would very much appreciate it. I have only lost 18 pounds since I started this whole thing back in October. I am into close to 3 months and I feel like I should have lost more weight.

I was banded in February 2010. I've lost 68 pounds..... never pb'd or slimed. I I felt just like you do now. I've had some months of slow weightloss. When that happens, I tell myself, I didn't gain the weight overnight and I'm not going to lose it overnight. My only regret is not having done it sooner. Good luck in your decision.
