Band Slippage...It is a BIG deal!

I sit here struggling with the notion to write this or not...but something someone said to me yesterday is very disturbing. I think her words were "A Slipped Band is not a BIG Deal, quit your whining it can be fixed."

I followed all the rules the Doctor gave me and for 18 months have had phenominal success with my band. I eat right and I excercise and within this time have lost 129 lbs...putting me 5 lbs under my original goal. Two weeks ago I came down extremely ill with the FLU and my world changed. I've never been so sick in all my life and the vomitting was non-stop. It landed me in the ER for two days, my Lapband slipped, they unfilled it...hoping it would fall back into place. Unfortunately it didn't and surgery was scheduled. My Doctor was not sure what they would find. Could I have been so sick that it could of caused a possible errosion. I was lucky...but it is a VERY BIG DEAL! I was in surgery for 4 hours to fix my Slipped Lapband...and a 3 day hospital stay. It just really angered me yesterday when someone told me to quit whining about surgery. Surgery is risky no matter who you are or how healthy you are. Don't get me wrong I LOVE my Lapband and I love the success I've had with it...but surgery of any kind is scary. Things like "throwing up" shouldn't be taken so lightly or carelessly. A slipped band can and will happen if you don't take care of yourself properly.

I thought this forum was for sharing your stories and helping and supporting one another. If I can help one person not go through what I did, then its a success. Obviously I couldn't stop the Flu from happening, but I wish I would of gone to the Doctor at the first sign of being sick and had my Lapband unfilled. Maybe then I'd be out running today instead of being on day 7 of recovery.

I will however not let this stop me or drag me down. I'm loving life and love the "new me". Everyone has a story and deserves to be heard!

"A Slipped Band is not a BIG Deal, quit your whining it can be fixed.

To who ever said this to you... BOO! That is such crud.

I so adore you for holding your head up and taking a stance for your self. Band slippage is a big deal. We discussed it in depth at a support group Monday night. Band slippage and self injury of our bands are the strongest fears shared by bandsters. That you actually experienced it is sad and dissapointing.

I'm only 2 months and 30 pounds out and if someone told me that my band slipped, and heavens to bessy, they had to take it away... My spirit would be crushed!

Stay positive. I love your posts, your attitude and your fortitude!!!!

You are so right. ANY surgery is a big deal and what you went thru.. that must have been rough. I appreciate your sharing. A slippage is my biggest fear with my band period. I was private pay and don't think my insurance would cover any repairs if I had complications, I don't know what I would do. I have drained my husbands 401k to have the first lap band. Please tell me how you get "slippage" and how you know if you have it. God bless and goodluck to you. There are always going to be nasty people out there where ever you are....ignore them and embrace the support system offered to you. Again, thanks for sharing. Mechelle

Thank you so much for responding to my Blog. Knowing I can help one person...well, that is all that matters. My slippage was caused from vomitting associated with the Flu. The pain in which I had in my abdomen was so unbearable that I had my daughter rush me to the Emergency Room. After getting the vomitting and pain under control the ER Doctor had me do a Barium Swallow and the Slippage was detected....my Lapband was unfilled by the Bariatric Specialist on-call and I was told to wait to see if it would slip back into place. Two days later the pain was still so unbearable and I ended up having Emergency Surgery for the Repair.

I'm now on my way and recovering well!

You can rest assured that you have helped at least one person... me! I read your story and immediately turned to my hubby and said "We are all getting our flu shots this year!" We have started looking into where to get it that will take our insurance, even though its early in the season.

So, thank you for your post!

I couldn't agree more. God Bless you for going thru all of that! Obviously the person who said that is not educated enough to know that IT IS A BIG FREAKIN DEAL!

Glad you are doing better! You are an inspiration to us all!

Tell whomever to get their facts straight before they open their mouth. A slipped band is a very big deal. When my band slipped there was no way it was "going back into place" because I busted all of the stitches that hold the band in place from throwing up......I am right there with you.....we will "retrain" for that marathon!!!! We will get there!!!!!

Wow! I just posted on my blog about my band slip too and then I read your story. Mine was because of vomiting as well but I was very lucky and did not require surgery. The pain I had, the night gagging, vomiting liquids, inability to eat or drink was definitely serious! Anyone who thinks a band slipping is not that serious hasn't experienced how awful it feels. My doctor said it is an emergency when a band slips and should not be ignored. I am working on sticking to the plan better so I don't have the experience again. I hope your recovery goes smoothly and congratulations on your weight loss. You look fabulous!

You were right to post, I have learned more about my band from those right here on LapBandtalk than I did from my Dr's office. I don't think the Nurses are well versed to help because they don't live with this band daily like we do! You know your own body better than anyone, and ONCE when I was sick, I did not want to SHAME myself and tell the Dr.!! I was stupid, never again! I made up my mind that this is MY JOURNEY, not theirs, but they are there to help me along the way. I paid for my surgery and it was very serious to me, any complicatons can arise from this or any other major surgery and even death! So I never take surgery as casual! You look great and are such a great addition to this group. Glad to have you as a friend!

Yes!!!! I am here to testify that any kind of surgery is risky. Before I had my lapband surgery I was SO healthy other than weight. My surgeon said I have no worries you will come out of surgery fine. Well I didn't. I had a bad reaction to anesthesia and slipped by band immediately. Had a 2nd surgery 3 days later and ended up with my lungs collapsing during surgery and going into tachycardia. When the surgeon and respiratory therapist came in my room that night and told me that I said WHAT!?!?!?! I just ran a half marathon a few months ago how could my lungs collapse??? I also taught 8-10 aerobic classes a week. That proves to you that it doesnt' matter how healthy surgery is always a risk.

I hope you are doing well and glad you got your slip fixed. You look great!

After going to the seminar last night and the surgeon mentioning the problem with slippage from vomiting/wretching, it does concern me for the reasons of flu, migraine, etc. I wonder if there is a way to prevent the slippage when you know you are first sick, I will have to ask but if anyone knows, let us know. Thanks for sharing.

I highly recommend having a prescription for anti-nausea meds on hand....and if necessary and your still vomiting/wretching....go in for an Unfill. Its definetely not worth taking a chance (as I did) and I'll never take being sick so lightly again. I don't want to ever go through this again.

It's not a big deal, it's a GIGANTIC deal. I personally think it's bigger than actually having the initial surgery - more traumatic for me anyway. I was to have my revision surgery last Tuesday and woke up to " We took it out - to let your stomach rest". How'd you like to wake up to those words? Yep. I still am in disbelief bc I cannot believe I no longer have it. I wasn't expecting it to be an option even though yes the doc said possibility. So, this time around surgery was very stressful and painful now I have to 'wait and see' - which means fight ins company for another procedure (no idea how that works), mentally rewind, time off from work again and more medical costs....Idk...it all is a big deal to me. There is really SOOOO much more - I've bitched enough. :(

Glad you didn't have to go through this and wishing you a speedy recovery! Take Care!
