Before I was banded, I ate lots of sweets, smoked 1/2 a pack per day, and drank 4-5 Diet Cokes per day. I 2 weeks before my surgery and I don't eat more that 30 carbs a day - I am doing fine with that. My problem you ask? I would do about anything...and yes, I mean anything!!!...for a Diet Coke. I have tried Diet Snapple, Powerade Zero, G@, VitaminWater, Minute Maid Pomegranite Tea, Minute Maid Light Lemonade - nothing satisfies my thirst like a cold DC! I WANT DIET COKE!!! I am begining to wonder if I really can live life without my Diet Coke. I am foghting my cravings but it is so hard since my surgeon never even explained why I cannot have one...help!

There are several reasons.

The bubbles from carbonation are painful. Not uncomfortable, extremely painful. You aren't able to burp like you did pre-band so no way for the bubbles to clear. It hurts. It causes a pressure against your diagphram that causes a shot of pain into your shoulder.

Secondly caffeine is an appetite stimulant causing hunger. Caffeine also helps to stretch the stomach faster.

Just some fuel for thought!

In the end you have to do what works for you. I'm not advocating the diet coke, but I feel your pain. I have to have a cup of coffee every morning. I know people have said that's not good, but honestly I follow a pretty healthy diet and lifestyle and I didn't feel as if I could give up everything at once. I've gone from 2-3 diet cokes and 2-3 cups of coffee a day to 1 cup of coffee a day and maybe 1-2 diet cokes a month. This is a forever thing. You have to work at what works for you! Best of luck.....

Lets face the facts here!!! It's NOT REAL. It is not a real food.

I know what you are experiencing and it stinks, it is so hard, and our minds are so strong. I was banded June 29, 2009. I have NOT had a soda or carbonated drink since that day. Over a year. Yes, I miss it sometimes. It took about 2 weeks maybe a little longer to be free of the cravings. I wanted one just like you do. It was like a drug for me. It is NOT real. The sooner you are free of all the chemicals in the convenience products the BETTER you are going to be.

I have lost 110 pounds and I eat REAL FOOD, not too much, mostly plants with PROTEINS first. You will have Success if you follow the rules. Best wishes on your Journey Just say NO one soda thought at a time. Best wishes imaluckydog

I was the queen of diet coke! I drank one first thing in the morning like a coffee and then would drink at least another 6 or 7 through out the day. I never thought I could give it up, but I did. About a month before the band I started on caffine free then slowly each week less and less. I still havent had one since the band, I'm scared lol. I was told bubbles are super painful and that the carbination could cause band erosion...? I think me having the fear is a good thing lollol :) You will do what is right for you. good luck and keep us posted!

I too would love to have a soda every once in awhile. Unfortunatly my dr told me it can cause bloating and I put myself at risk for my band to slip. It's not worth it to me. I think if you get use to drinking water and teas you will eventually not even miss the soda and in the long run you'll feel better.

Thank you for your comments. I have not had a a DC since 7/26/10 and I do not intend to have one. I just needed to vent and be reminded that I need to follow the rules for a reason.
