I have a Facebook page and everyone on there I've known moset of my life. But I'm trying to decide if I should tell everyone that I'm have the Lap Band surgery on Sept 21st. I dont know why I want to reveal it to everyone. What would you do?

I say if that's what you want to do, then go for it! It seems like everyone has a preference on who to tell and who not to tell. It seems to range from everyone to a select few. If you are one to share the happiness, I say scream it from the rooftops!

It is a hard choice to make. I am the only one that knows my husband has had the surgery. He was banded this month. He just didn't want all the questions, non supporters and opinions given. His good friend is very open about it and sees no reason to keep it to himself. So it is really your comfort level level that will let you know what is right for you. I am guessing if you are questioning it, may be you should not tell everyone of facebook at this time. You may want to let them know later, a few months down the line. Best of luck to you. I know for my husband he has not regrets having the surgery, it has been the best thing ever, but he is so glad it is a private matter at this time. It is just easier on him. :0)

I debated telling everyone myself, but decided against it at the last minute. To me its a very personal choice and I didn't want to open myself up to negativity or judgement. I told about 10 people who are close to me, and already 2 are acting weird around me and not being so supportive. Your friends & family might be totally different and very supportive, this is just what I did. I did this for me, not for anyone else!

I told too many people and I wish I hadn't. I feel like I have 100 people staring at me, expecting me to just be skinny tomorrow. Suggestion? Wait until you've spent a month on the band and see how you feel? Tell your closest friends/spouse etc just so you can get surgical support, but wait on the rest for awhile?

You are right, Sandra, everyone does expect you to be thin right after the surgery is done. They have no idea of the work it takes and it is no way a quick fix. I feel it is terrible that this surgery has a negative stigma attached to it. People that never had an issue or lives with someone that struggles with their weight just does not understand. Anyway.. have a good day all!

Ditto to Sandra and Maw.....anyone not familiar with the Lapband thinks its an easy "fix-all". Not everyone knows that we still have to work hard & make good choices every day. And when you do lose, they all assume it has been easy because of the band!

The only one in my life that knows is my husband.. My brother was with me this weekend and when he questioned my diet, I told him I am having a female procedure.. ha ha - but he bought it no questions asked.. I am relying on friends for support with my kids on the day of surgery.. so I told them I am having my Gallbladder out.. same scars.. same recovery.. not one of them has even questioned my diet.. when I go out to one of their homes.. I have a decaf tea from dunkin donuts in my hands.. to keep me from eating and their questions at bay..

I was wondering if i should put it on facebook. I keep in touch with a lof of my family on facebook. I have told 2 people, but did it in a private message to them. I have told quite a few people at my job, they all are very excited for me. But now I feel they will be watching me to see how fast i lose weight. I think i will wait awhile before i put it on facebook. I am thinking about just changing my profile picture when I lose 50 lbs.

This is a life change for me so why not share this journey with my friends and family. So I posted on my facebook and to tell you the truth it has it's up and down. But I think if you post it, tell in person your always going to have those few people that will comment to your choice or some that will try to prove to you that they could loss the pounds on their own .Luckly I had nothing but good comment and support from friends and family.Im proud of this good thing.

I told everyone and it took time for me to get used to people constantly monitoring what I was going to eat next or how many times I stood from the table to go the restroom. Now, I am greatful, becuase it also keep me on track. Because all my friends and family knew, I was always more concious of what I ate and I think in the long run, that is part of why I have lost so much weight. But everyone is different. God Bless, M-

When i got it done I felt proud that I was doing something to better myself. And what we need to remember is that the lap band is not a quick fix, we still have to do all the work and the band is just a tool that we use along the journey. We still have to make the commitment to eat healthy and exercise. So for me I told everyone and I am very glad I did. I get so much support from everyone from them giving me tips on low-carb recipes, to wanting to work out with me!! I feel that I have one big support center that is focused on me for a change! Well good luck in what ever you decide and remember the road ahead is not easy and the the lap band is just a tool to guide us!!
