Protein Question

I do not do protein shakes. I absolutely hate them. I really tried at the begining when I first got banded because I was not allowed to have anything mushy. I know when I get my first fill, perhaps 9/1, my doctor will tell me to go back to liquids and that would include the protein shakes before hitting the pureed stage, but I still hate them.

I am 8 weeks post-surgery and get all of my protein from regular food. How about you? What is everyone else doing? Please let me know - protein shakes or not? Strictly protein from your meats, cheese and eggs?

I am curious to see what comments I get. And I hope I get a lot.

Hi Bklynike, I am 5 weeks post op and tried after 3 weeks to not use protein shakes . . I found I was only getting about 450 calories in a day (I was getting my 60 gm of protein), and I was getting fatigued, so I called the dietician and she said to continue the protein shakes until I can take in enough food to get the calories up. I use Carnation Instant Breakfast - No sugar added - (13 gms with milk) or Syntrax Nectar (many flavors and 23 gm of protein in water). I am curious how on earth to take in enough calories w/o the protein shakes ? Good luck on your quest - I'll be checking back to see what others say.

The Nectar tastes good. There are protein shots (Walmart) that are ok, and if you chase them with water or vitamin water you are ok.

I can't stand the texture of powder mixed with milk or water. I did the slim fast low carb with a couple fresh strawberries, 1/2 a banana, honey, vanilla (not much of any), blended with some ice. I didn't taste anything but cold and some fruit.

Greek yogurt is very smooth, goes down like a shake and has a lot of protein as well.

Make sure you have vitamins, fiber, calcium or whatever you might take in either chewable or liquid form.

Good luck! Way to be prepared........ :-).

I did some of the premade chocolate (I like EAS) shakes after fills...not too bad. I also 'doctored' up my protein powder I had leftover from banding (fruit flavored) and added milk and lots and lots of frozen fruits to it. -BG

Hi, I am going on my 8th month now since surgery in Jan 10. I first began using V8 Juice right after surgery. Then some shakes like Ensure and now SlimFast with a multivitamin in the mornings when I don't have time to fix breakfast. I have eaten cheese omelet, two eggs over easy with a toast, or oat meal. I don't like smoothies, as I read one pack and it was high in sugar, very little protein. I recently bought and am using Whey Protein, Professional Strenght 52g Protein. I like this product. I have lots of energy and usually get up at 3 am in the mornings. I usually plan my protein by eating chicken, fish, or beef with a veggie. Love the fish. Baked chicken is a plus as I boil it first the bake in oven for two hours. Sometimes I try a tuna salad sandwhich. Of course water is a must throughout the day too. Good luck on your journey

I eat Chobani Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and lots of tuna to get my protein. Have you tried Unjury chicken soup flavor protein powder? It tastes like warm chicken broth to me. You can get a sample pack to try it would at least get you through the days after a fill.

I still have a Myoplex EAS Chocolate protein shake everyday! I am one of those weird ones that absolutely loves them...still 8 months out and still loves them!! I also have the Protein Shots from walmart on hand just in case I don't get enough protein in that day..depending on what I eat that day or if I just feel like I want a little extra I will take the "shot" of protein. I drink the shake for breakfast due to I do not like breakfast food..unless it is biscuits and gravy with fried eggs (now doesn't that sound healthy...more like a heart attack waiting to happen!) Take care!

i love the vanilla protein powder b/c then i can add frozen fruit (fresh), a small double-shot yogurt (frozen), 1 pkg Splenda, 4 ice cubes and just a little water. I keep everything frozen until i'm ready to blend. it tastes so good! like a shake!!! i make it thick and can eat it like ice cream (and pretend)!! yum!

    • I’ve used my Xbox for exercise games too and it can be pretty motivating, especially on days when I don’t want to leave the house. Kinect games really do make you move, and after a session with kickboxing or dancing, I always feel like I’ve actually gotten a solid workout. The controller-free setup feels way more natural for workouts than anything I tried on the Wii. Zumba is fun but definitely takes a little time to get the moves right. Lately, when I’m not working out, I spend time trading CS2 skins and finding new guides on this link. There’s a lot of interesting tips if you’re into games outside of fitness too.
