I was at my first post-surgery support group last night. There were a lot of people there. I must say I was a little suprised by the turn out. My husband came with me, and was the only husband, the only supportive family member, the only man in the meeting. I was so happy he came with me, although he felt a little out of place. But the meeting was very informative and everyone seemed very nice, although some of them were a little nuts. Read on and you'll see what I mean.

Some of us were "newbies" under 6 months, but there was also a woman 4 years out. Many of the women around a year, and 1 woman who is not scheduled until next month to have her surgery.

I learned that I was probably not really ready for my first fill. I am still content between meals and not overeating. Still losing weight and feeling great. I postponed my first fill until next Thurs.

There was actually a woman there who found out her band had twisted so she needs to have it replaced. She was so angry about it that she started eating anything and everything just to see what would make her sick. Throwing up and feeling horrible, she did this for over a week. Crazy? You bet. She is having the band replaced next month.

Others were talking about how they have found ways to cheat. What? R U kidding me? How do you think you became the size of a house????

One woman said she had taken "time off for herself" and gained back over 30lbs.

Maybe it is because I paid for the surgery myself, or maybe it is because I am just so excited and jubliant about how I am feeling, but the thought of cheating or eating something I know will make me sick is not going to happen. I go out to eat with my husband a couple times a week. I always try to make the best choice for me, and have been successful. I have waited 3 long years for this surgery; my health and happiness is more important to me than a bowl of spaghetti or a slice of cake.

The things we do to ourselves, sheesh. Congrats on the success you've had so far. You attitude combined with your band sound like a recipe for great success. Keep up the good work!

I think that is what is so great about support groups -- you see all kinds and it fortifies your resolve. I felt that way last night as well. Keep it up :-).

I do agree that in some cases had they went thru what we have..waited for a couple of years and then had to pay out of our own pockets they may have done things differently. I do look at it as a lifestyle change and want to make sure I am eating things now that I will eat for the rest of my life..I do not want to only eat things now that once I hit my goal that I eat differently and will gain weight so I eat everything under the sun..just very small portions. So my description of spaghetti is 3 small meatballs and 4 noodles chopped very well..so I still eat it but nothing like I used to. I never was into the cake part..just the icing..now I lost the taste for sweets. I do have a recipe for a cool whip/jello pie..it has 3 calories...if I am really craving something for desert I make it. My dad calls it the fly away pie because it is so light but it is light and fluffy and even the nutritionist said it is somewhat good for you. Anyway...I know I rattled on a little too much there but that is my two cents for the night. Glad you went to support. It sounds a lot like my group!!

I agree totally with all your comments, I too paid for my surgery and I would never want to Cheat Myself out of the good it has done for me. I eat sensibly now and If I don't lose I maintain. And I am so happy that I too have a husband that supports me and most of my friends do too! You know what? If you had a good week, the meeting needs you, if you had a bad week you need the meeting! I truly believe this! No matter what you heard, you learned a great deal from it ALL right? And I know you now know what NOT to do! That is what I too learn! God Bless you, just keep up the good work.

My insurance paid for my surgery but i am the one who went through the ordeal (of the surgery)!!! so why on earth would i try to "cheat"??!!! insane!!! I'd be cheating myself! my doc gets paid either way - if i'm fat or skinny! DUH! is all i can say!! I mean a "slip up" here or there a cave-in to a craving is one thing, but down right setting out to cheat es LOCO!!!!
