Drink while we eat? I know we aren't supposed to..but I don't really know why? It's an extremely hard habbit for me to break. I'm only still on mushy food and soups but I always find myself reaching for my water.

Can someone explain to me why or rather what happens when we drink while eating?

What you actually do is "wash" down the protein you just ate is basically is the simpliest way to put it. Once you start getting fills (or restriction) you will not be able to (or should not be able to). I actually get stuck if I have anything (and I many anything) to drink while I eat. A couple of ideas that might help is to make sure you do not make yourself anything to drink so there isn't any tempation or to make yourself a glass of ice and set it on the counter and when it has melted then you will have an ice cold glass of water. Yes, old habits are hard to break but an old saying is that it only takes 21 days to make a new habit..so do it for 21 days and then it will be old news!! I know you can do it!!! Take care!!

i am 6 weeks post op and i too find that i am drinking while i eat...i have spoken with the nurse about this habit and she tells me we cant break every habit all at once but to continue working on it......the reason for not drinking for 30-60 min after eating is to keep the food from being pushed thru the small pouch so u feel fuller longer.....just keep trying and best of luck to you...thats what i am doin

Yes I should have added to my statement as emetyb01 said..if you flush your protein then you will be hungry sooner..so you need to keep your protein in you as long as possibly can.

That makes sense! I never really understood. I will try that ice trick. That sounds like a great idea. I get so thirsty so it's really hard, but I will do it.

Thanks for the replies.

---->>this has been a VERY hard habit for me to break too...I start timing myself right away...I cant have any water until 60-90 mins after i eat....so, when i swallow my last bite, I look at the clock and time an hour!!!! it helps not to bring water to the table. if we're out to dinner, i push the water far away or give it to my husband.

--->>no water b/c it will wash the food down. I do see a big difference when i do NOT drink the water....so i guess its worth it!!!!

Break the habit(s) is the best solution. You CAN do it :-)

The liquids also dilute the food particles you eat and not only will you NOT feel as full for as long but your body does not have a chance to absorb the proteins from your food you just ate. Protein is the only nutrient that is not stored in our body. We can't afford to push it through. We need all the nutrients the food will provide us. We are not eating that much so make your choices a high quality real protein food.
