Hello, my name is Allen and I was banded 8-17-09 and I didn't have to go on a pre-op diet eather. My doctor said most of his people didn't have a pre-op diet.

everyone I spoke to had to go on the liquid diet 1 week before surgery, including me...the reason for this is because they go in with the scope, and if your liver is filled with food, its hard for the, (the doctor) to lift up the liver with a stick, and my doctor said one time the liver was so heavy, she stoped the surgery and rescheduled. because if the stck breaks it can cause infection etc. i hope this helps you...fast on your own...you will loose weight pre-op

I agree with Meesh. My doc has a strict diet policy pre-surgery, and he hopes you continue the diet post-op. He took me down to liquid slowly. First, I had a few months of low-carb diet. (This is the most difficult part, IMHO.) Then he took me down to soft, easy to digest foods, and finally, liquids only for the week before surgery. Was it fun? No. However, Meesh is correct. The liver should be reduced to avoid complications, bruising and even splitting of your liver. Who needs that? Getting a band is enough to handle. Don't make your body work more than it has to.

Hello,

I was banded on 7/2/09 and did not have to do a preop diet. My BMI was 40. I have lost 30# and feel great.

Good luck to you!

I'm new here but have comment about this. I was put on a soft diet pre-op for 1 week. My bmi was 42 and my surgery was on Aug. 14th, 09. Now I am progressing to some solid foods and those not so delicious protein drinks. But whatever works is what I'll do.

I didn't have any pre-op diet...my doc said he's never had a problem with anyone's liver and he takes on some of the largest people in our area. That said, I did cut back on things and I think anything you can do to lose weight and prepare for the changes will be a benefit to you. I'd at least ask my doc if he's ever had a problem or had to cancel a surgery because of an enlarged liver.
