Called off the surgery - anyone feeling this way?

I've gone thru the introduction, insurance approvals etc and was actually scheduled for surgery within the next few days before I called it off. The Phase I diet was a breeze and actually dropped 8 lbs in the two week period - then came Phase II with the protein shakes and fiber supplements - within 4 days I was feeling nausea & dizziness that left me unable to function at work (including dropping 14 lbs in 4 days). My physician's office recommended adding a piece of fruit to my daily intake which I did. But to no avail, I felt even worse by day 7 of Phase 2 and that's when I cancelled the surgery and returned to eating protein & vegetables. I'm feeling a little better (the nausea is gone somewhat) but I'm still feeling dizzy and my vision is blurry. Has anyone else experienced these side effects? and if so, what course of action did you take. I'm really scared to re-schedule the surgery based on what I'm feeling now and knowing that I can't function like this continually.

I think that you need to go with your gut feeling on what decision feels right to you. I wanted to call of the surgery as the nurse was putting the IV in my arm, but I didn't. Then, after the surgery was over, I wished I had had the guts to walk out when it didn't feel right. Now I am 10 days post op, and I am adjusting ok at this point, but I am not sure I actually "needed" the surgery. I have lost weight with the protein shakes, which I could have done without the band. I am just hoping that as time goes on it will help me to maintain the weight loss and not regain. Only time will tell if it was the right decision or not. But if I were to do it again, I probably would have canceled at this point.

You have to do what feels right for you. Remember you may think the postop was a breeze and that you lost weight so easily that you don't need the band but most of us have lost before but been unable to keep it off. If dieting on its own worked I doubt you would have got to the stage where you booked the surgery.

I agree with elcee. I went to my intro meeting in Dec and it took until April before I decided to do the surgery. I was just at 40 BMI before surgery on the 28th of July and at my 1 week post op I had lost 13 lbs since my first day on liquids prior to surgery. I would have thought the same thing as you Shannie, but I know I have failed every "diet" and regained. I am 57 and this was my last chance to do it right. I am happy I made the choice. I start puree food tomorrow and in a week or 2 soft/solid food. My first fill is on Sep 9th.

I wonder if you could have had some blood drawn when you were feeling bad to see what caused it. I dont thinks its normal to get those significant symptoms on protein shakes...if it was water only, I'd say yes.Hypoglycemia or some electrolyte balance an be serious and it should probably be diagnosed before you decide what to do. You know whats best for you.Good luck, trust yourself.

Today's the day I was supposed to have my surgery and didn't. I'm still torn as to whether or not to re-schedule based on the problems I have encountered during the past two weeks. In the meantime I'm going to follow the low carb/no sugar approach to my meals and see how I feel in a few weeks. My blood work came back all within normal levels but I'm still not feeling well - wish me luck!
