Need to make better choices

So I'm having problems making wise food choices of late. I can't really eat much of these foods because of the band but I still wanted to do better as far as the choices go. The doctor told me I could eat regular foods again but I have PB'd a few times doing this. All my life I have been a fast eater and haven't chewed my food up as I should so I'm thinking that I need to chew more (I have slowed down though). I am trying to do much better in this area.   I have not exercised at all lately, including walking, so I'm failing in that area too. The weather has become much cooler now so hopefully that will motivate me to get going. My weight is at a standstill and it's my own fault. I'm thinking about signing up for a 5K just to get me motivated to start exercising.   Frustrated at myself.

Down 15 lbs.

So I went for my one month check-up today and have lost 15 lbs. since my surgery date (8/26). That was a nice surprise! I thought I had lost only 12 lbs and was perfectly happy with that. I was supposed to have my first fill on Wednesday but he went ahead and gave me one today. I also found out that I had 5 cc's put in at the time of surgery and the PA added another 1 cc today.   I was so hungry by the time I left the office but am back to liquids for two days now. By Friday he said I could go to regular foods and instructed me to get in about 60 grams of protein a day. I can't wait to start experimenting with new foods. :rolleyes2:   Went to the heart dr. today too and after an ECG was told that I have a perfectly healthy heart. That was a huge load off of my mind!

Went bowling last night for the first time in ages. We are on a Fall bowling league and I haven't been able to bowl the first three weeks (doctor's orders) since I had lap band surgery. It was fun and pretty easy; I enjoyed it other than the cigarette smoke everywhere. I did eat a few french fries and half of a cheese stick yesterday. Should not have done that but they were soft and I chewed them up good. Calorie wise I am probably not having enough. Got on the scale this morning and lost another .5 lbs. I'm so glad it is Friday! My husband and I are going camping in Tyler this weekend. Our two youngest kids are in college there. My oldest daughter, her husband and my granddaughter will be joining us so it's going to be a fun weekend! I have two tests this next week and will need to study some this weekend too. I haven't been studying like I normally do so will pick up the pace.

9/16/8

I tried to eat a hmb. patty last night and must not have chewed it up enough. A bite became stuck and it hurt so bad. I ended up getting sick and it all came back up. I hope I never do that again, it was very uncomfortable. I decided to go to bed and not even try to eat anything else.   Lost 10 lbs. in the past three weeks. Can't wait to get a fill next week.

09/13/08

I grew up in Houston and have many friends there. I have been trying to call some of my friends this morning and can't get in touch with them. I spoke with them last night and they were all boarded up and prepared for Ike. Hope they are okay and not in harms way; I will probably hear from them soon.   My HESI test is over with and I made a 94 overall. It was much easier than I thought but I'm glad I studied the math part more than anything.   I have lost about 10 lbs. now since 8/26, kind of slow I know but it's better than the alternative. I am taking in more calories and it seems to help. Yesterday I managed to get in 60 oz. of water which is something I have not been able to do since my surgery.   My plans are to get out and start walking Monday morning. It is supposed to be cooler here in the Dallas area too so that will be nice. I love to walk early in the mornings at the track and watch the sun come up. It makes me mad that I ever stopped walking, it is so hard to get back into the swing of things. I was up to walking/jogging 3 miles about 5 to 6 days a week.

9/11/8

Hurricane Ike is starting to concern me. Even though we are so far from the coast, I'm still worried about the weather on the eastern side of it. I'm also concerned about friends and family in Houston. As of this mornings news what is left of the eye will go right between the county I live in and the one my kids at college are in. It's still a long ways off so I may be worrying for nothing. I want my kids to come home for the weekend and my husband keeps telling me everything will be okay. I'm the mom and I want them home!   Thoughts of 9/11/01 have also been on my mind. I think of all the people that lost loved ones and all those little children that lost a parent. Those kids are between 6, 7 or 8 years old and in school now.....hard to believe.   The area around where my port is hurts just about every morning when I get up. It's where the stitches were and it generally gets better as the day goes on.   I missed the first week of my bowling league but will try bowling tonight. My ball only weighs about 9 lbs. so hopefully I will not pull anything out of whack. I mainly worry about those few stitches where my stomach overlaps the band and wonder if it is healed now.   Yesterday I tried cottage cheese and it went down good. I love cottage cheese so it was a treat. I have mainly been drinking Atkins shakes and some soups, eating Hawaiian Delight baby food, sugar free chocolate pudding, refried beans w/cheese and I have had a few baked potatoes. It's getting old but I will hang tough until day 30.

2 Weeks Post-Op

I'm feeling much better than I did the first week. I know I'm not getting in enough calories and need to find a way to do that. I have lost 8 lbs. which I am happy with. I want to start walking at the track but I think I need to work on taking in more calories. I guess I'm confused on how to do that when I'm at the soft and mushy food stage (thru day 30) with two shakes a day. My soft food servings are to be only 3-6 oz. Guess I need to go to Big D and find a GNC to get some of those protein bullets someone told me about. Do I try to eat every two hours just to get in all the calories I need? I know taking in more calories would help my weight loss and my body wouldn't be in this starvation mode it is in. School is going well and I have a HESI test on Friday that I will be studying for. This test could be the determining factor on whether I get into the nursing program so I will focus most of my attention on that this week.

8/3/8

Started school yesterday and one of my classes is an internet class. I have never taken a class over the internet but I think I'm going to like it. Nothing like being in your pj's, drinking coffee and talking to other students and teacher online.   I'm feeling good but believe that I need to have more calories. I'm going to try some different things with my protein powder today so that I can get more protein in. I'm loving the Hawaiian Delight baby food dessert and I drink one or two Atkins chocolate shakes a day. Yesterday I bought the cream of chicken cup of soup and had a couple of those. There is lots of sodium in those but they are so good. I am going to up my water intake to 80 oz a day also, especially since I really like those cr. of chicken sodium filled soups.   Wonder when I can start exercising. I still have a sore spot on my stomach where the stiches are. It hurts mainly when I get up out of bed so I think it is just the stitches stretching.

1 Week Post-Op

I started out at 235 before surgery and was up to 237.5 afterwards. This morning I am finally down to 230.5 so I can officially say -4.5 lbs. since surgery.   Overall I'm doing very well since surgery. When I get in and out of bed there is a particular area that bothers me (stiches) and I believe it is right above the port area. I bruise very easily too so the upper part of my stomach is black and blue.   This next information may be TMI for some so don't read. I finally had a bm this morning and feel so much better.   Today is the first day of school for me. I am taking Microbiology and a psychology class, the last two classes I need before applying to the nursing program this next January. I can't believe my goal is so close now.

8/31/8

The last couple of days have been pretty good and no headaches. I still haven't been getting enough calories and I believe my body is in the starvation mode. I have not lost any weight at all but have gained .5 lbs. I'm not going to worry about it but will try to get in more protein and calories.   We have had lots of company since yesterday and I cooked all morning long. I didn't feel any pangs of hunger at all. My only problem has been "thinking" about the potato salad I made and not being able to eat any of it. I'm not hungry, I just want it.   Have had some problems wearing a bra because of the incisions so we will see how I do with that today. I am having even more company today and I would hate to have to go put a robe and pj's back on (I would sure be comfortable though).   Completely off the pain medication now.

3 Days Post-Op

Woke up with another headache today. It must be the lack of food. I have had so few liquids, other than water and yet have gained 1.5 lbs. Guess my body is trying to hold on to everything it can and I'm in starvation mode? Or it could be from the gas still inside my body. I have been taking Gas-X and have had very little gas pain. I am going to work on getting more calories in today.   I am feeling good other than the headaches and am taking less of the pain medication that was prescribed to me by the dr. I am looking so forward to this next year and everything it has to offer. This time last year I was on the Medifast diet and lost 42 lbs. At my surgery date I had gained almost all of it back. I wish I would have gone ahead and had the lap band surgery last year instead of trying Medifast. That diet is too hard for me to stick to for the rest of my life.

Donna's Journey

Today I am two days post-op and feeling much better than I did yesterday and the day before. My main problem has been the headaches. I don't know if it is from no caffeine or no food. The first day I came home from the hospital I felt terrible and was really out of it. I didn't read up on my instructions like I should have and tried to sip on a shake to keep from getting a headache. I shouldn't have done that and I shouldn't have crushed some Advil and taken it to make the headache go away. "Only Tylenol" I was told after that. Gee what else can I do wrong.   My mom stayed with me the first and second day and I finally told my sisters and cousin yesterday that I had the surgery. They were pretty angry with me for not telling them. I didn't know that it was actually going to happen until the day before due to some EKG and stress test issues that ended up being okay. At least the dr. said there should be no problems considering my health history. I still have a cardiologist appt. next Wednesday for my own peace of mind. I'm just glad to have the lap band surgery out of the way.   I'm looking so forward to this next year.   Donna
