About this blog

Two weeks ago today, I was being wheeled into OR for my lap gastric bypass.  I am 8 lbs. down since that day, 23 lbs. down from my pre-op diet, and 39 lbs. from my highest weight ever.  I don't look different (yet) and other than being tired, I am doing well.  The decision to go for it was intense.  I'm a nurse and worked in the ICU where I saw what happens when things go wrong.  But I was only seeing the negative side, which skews perspectives.  When I told some friends I was considering this - after losing/regaining 100 lbs. TWICE as an adult, I was greeted with overwhelming support.  And many of those same friends told me that they had the surgery years ago.  I had no idea!  So now as I am progressing toward pureed foods, trying to figure out to gracefully navigate the holidays and stay within budget (i.e. shopping instead of eating!  Who knew?), I look to others who are on this journey.  So far, so good and it's early.  I look forward to getting to know all of you.  By the way - the biggest factors in making the decision for me was finding a surgeon I trusted, insurance coverage, and reading the literature (my nerd side!)

Two Weeks

I went for a walk this morning and it felt really nice.  I've never been a fast walker and my short legs take short steps.  So hitting 5000 was a big deal for me.  I was out of breath in the beginning and then realized I wasn't racing anyone.  I took my time and enjoyed the fall weather.  I'm a graduate student and it helped clear my head for a paper I'm writing.  Obviously, not entirely - I still have much work to do.  But progress!  The journey!  All that good stuff.  One of the things that I am most excited about is that I have a history of insomnia and have moments of anxiety (like when I am writing papers.   Since surgery, I have not taken any medications for either insomnia or anxiety and I am sleeping well.  That is a big milestone for me, totally unexpected.  I am going to try and weigh myself once a week and will begin taking pictures once a month.  This is really exciting - and scary.  It's life-changing for all of us.  I hope we all achieve our permanent goals!
